Port-Au-Prince, Haiti – Odette Roy Fombrun, a Haitian historian, author, and activist passed away on December 23, 2022. She was 105 years old. Mrs. Fombrun was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on June 13, 1917. She earned a teaching degree from Ecole Normale Superieure in 1935. After completing her nursing studies in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1945, she returned to her native country to teach and opened the first kindergarten/daycare there.
After living in exile for almost 27 years, Mrs. Fombrun wrote several fiction, nonfiction, novels, and history books. She also made a significant contribution to the drafting of the Haitian 1987 constitution.
In 2007, Odette Roy Fombrun established her own foundation with the goal of educating Haitian citizens about civic engagement and combitism (togetherness).
In recognition of her contributions to Haitian literature and education in general, Odette Roy Fombrun has won various awards throughout her career.
